Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

Summary: These simple and lightweight stoves burn wood and hexamine tablets as well as gas canisters and white fuel through a single nozzle. They're popular during cold weather but they're loud and don't have a simmer control.

Some multi-fuel stoves are hybrids, capable of burning multiple types of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal can be used with both white and isobutane canisters for fuel.

Optimus Nova

The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with a variety of liquid fuels. It has a quick-priming burner and an aluminum pump that self-purges and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide legs make it a sturdy and solid stove. This makes it a perfect stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking, and camping in the Arctic.

The Optimus Nova is different from other stoves with liquid fuel which have issues with unburned fuel remaining in the fuel line or nozzle. This can be fixed by flipping over the bottle. The intake hoses are then removed from the fuel, and forces them to take in air, which stifles flames and depressurizes the the bottle.

This seems like an innovative solution to an old problem, and it certainly is effective. The Nova can be used with a variety of regular fuel bottles that seal with an o-ring. This includes MSR bottles. It comes with an oven bag that has pockets for spares, tools, lubricant, and the fuel pump.

This is a fantastic stove for backpacking that is suitable for use in the UK. It is especially ideal for trips, where a variety of fuels are required. The price is very reasonable compared to other stoves in the canister category with similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and enjoyable to use.

Kovea Hydra

Since 2010, the Kovea multi fuel wood burning stoves Fuel Stove has been a favorite among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as well-known with UK backpackers any more Perhaps because they've been able to catch up with more well-known brands or the most recent lightweight options from China or Korea. But this doesn't mean that it's less useful.

It is a lightweight and compact stove that can burn all liquid fuels like white gas, propane butane, and white gas through only one nozzle. It has a fairly typical stove design, with a burner bell bolted to an aluminum body that is anchored by three support legs that fold out. A pump sits on the top of the fuel line and the generator loop is positioned around the inlet and the flame spreader sits above that. The burner itself is a low velocity flame that allows it to be less impacted by winds.

It is a nice feature that it can also be used with a container of isobutane or propane, making it a versatile small cooker. It is easy to simmer on isobutane or propane and burns all types of fuel at a reasonable level, however it is a bit slower than some other stoves when using white gas.

The instructions for the Hydra are written in English however they were clearly not written by native English speakers. The instructions warn against the use of certain types of lighter fluids that, if misinterpreted as what is actually intended can cause an accident that could result in Kovea in a lot of hot legal water. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas canister of a trusted brand will be fine.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an excellent choice for those who are looking for a multifuel cooker that cooks using a variety of fuels. It can be used with petrol/gasoline, gas, or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type and also allows to alter the size of the flame, which is a nice feature. This stove has a fuel pipe that is flat on the floor and is connected to the tank quickly.

While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it requires maintenance to ensure that it functions properly. Particularly it has a tendency to flare when priming which could be risky. This issue occurs with all liquid fuel stoves that use a second spindle on the stove end instead of an evaporator to cool the fuel.

It is also important to note that each fuel type needs a different jet. This means that if you're cooking using kerosene, the jet hole has to be smaller than when cooking with gas. This isn't a major issue but it's worth mentioning.

MSR Whisper Lite

The MSR Whisper Lite is one of the lightest, smallest and most affordable multi fuel stoves. It is also easy to repair in the field. It is able to be used with liquid gas or canister fuel and includes attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% than its predecessor, and the burner's system has been improved to improve heat distribution. It's great for beginners or budget-minded backpackers.

It takes some time to install, prime and boil water, but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not let you down. The flame is strong when turned to its maximum and will easily boil the water to a liter within two minutes or less. The only drawback is that it's not as efficient for simmering as other stoves.

This is the reason MSR has designed the Dragonfly stove to become a more capable simmering burner. It has a similar design as the whistler, but it is more compact and has better performance. However it's not as affordable as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is an excellent alternative that offers a similar setup for less than half the price. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane canisters as well. The same design is used for both, but the Universal version can be run with canister fuel in addition.

Coleman Sportster II

Like many Coleman stoves, this is a no frills unpretentious unit that will get the job done. It's sturdy, compact and self-contained with the tank on the bottom and burner up top. This makes it easy to use and a great option for backpackers, beginners who want to reduce weight and Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves for those who prefer to have a backup or two in the van.

This stove is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha, also known as "white gas") but can be used with unleaded gas too. A gallon of gasoline can last for as longer as a standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder so you'll save money on fuel by using this alternative.

Liquid fuel stoves have a steep learning curve, as you'll have to pressurize and prepare them to get a nice blue flame. If you don't do it correctly the fuel may pool, spray outside the burner, or even sputter. Try it out in the open before taking it on your next trip to learn how to do it.

This stove sacrifices some performance or flame odor effectiveness with non-coleman fuels however that's a trade off for the extra versatility it offers. Make sure you purchase unleaded gas, and not one that is augmented with alcohol or methanol. These types of fuel can cause the unit's performance to degrade and even explode.

ATG Jiko

The ATG Jiko multi-fuel stove made in South Africa (formerly known as the jiko) is a lightweight multifuel stove built for harsh environments such as Africa. It's a compact, robust stove that burns solid fuel tabs, gels and alcohol with a single nozzle. It's a minimalist, ultralight design that costs less than other multifuel stoves. Fuel is also cheaper per liter when compared to gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves have an individual nozzle for each kind of fuel. This makes them a little fiddly to change over in cold weather or using gloves and can add to their overall weight. The latest models of multifuel stoves have discovered an option to use the same nozzle for various fuels, which makes it simpler. The newer versions of these stoves are known as 'hybrid' or "compressed fuel multifuel stoves' and there are a variety of names for them, including isobutane canister fuel white gas, kerosene and unleaded car gasoline/petrol.

Another option is to purchase an multifuel stove kit which converts your standard Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. These are often available at camping stores that specialize in camping and are available internationally. They are a good option for Trangia fans. They're capable of burning all liquid fuels with the exception of diesel and if used with the correct accessories can even simmer.
